Fall has to be one of my favourite seasons. In Calgary, Alberta, that could mean plus 20 degrees Celsius or down to minus 5 degrees Celsius, WITH SNOW!!! Either way, it's a beautiful season here in Alberta when I love to get outside and pop into a favourite coffee shop for a warm latte and sweet treat or stick around at home and get into some decorating and baking.
These are some of the things I like to do around our house to embrace cozy season:
Warm Welcome at the Doorstep: Whether you have a covered porch, a front stoop or an apartment door, you could add some seasonal decor. Hang a pretty wreath with warm, colourful leaves; place some pumpkins (real or fake) of different sizes and colours and throw down a natural jute welcome mat at the front door.
Fall-Inspired Palette: I like to infuse warm tones like rust, rich browns, and earthy greens. If you're not a huge fan of those colours, try some natural or rustic elements that can bring just as much warmth into the room. Pillows, throws, and even small decor items can transform the ambiance.
Light Some Candles The days get shorter here in Calgary, Alberta and that's a perfect opportunity to light some candles while making dinner and enjoying the evening at home. You can infuse your space with autumn scents or just create a warm ambiance with simple tapered candles, both are perfect additions to creating an inviting atmosphere.
Layered Textures: Introduce cozy textures like wool, plaid knit blankets, and some plush area rugs. I'm always on the look out for rugs, throw blankets and pillows that I can easily swap out from from season to season. It makes it feel like you've done something drastic to the house, but really, it's just changing out some easy to change layers that are much more affordable than changing out a whole piece of furniture or painting the walls. Only precaution is that you might need some extra storage space for all those seasonal pieces, just ask my husband.đđđ
Decorating with Foraged Goods: Some of my favourite natural decor pieces in the house were foraged during a weekend walk down in the ravines by our place. My two kids, who are now teenagers, ventured ahead of us and into the thick woods and found some naturally shed deer antlers. We have held on to the antlers along with some pine cones, sculptural branches, and wild grasses that I use as decor throughout the seasons and it was all courtesy of mother nature. You never know what you might find on your walks through your city, keep an eye out!
I love to do the seasonal change ups, some times it's all these things, but some times just lighting a candle and having a cup of tea is the perfect way to enjoy your surroundings. Either way, surround your self with things and people that you love!
