Creating Realistic Home Spaces

Don't get me wrong, I love beautiful, sprawling kitchen and living room photos just like you! My pinterest and instagram feeds are full of massive kitchens you can dance in while cooking up a picture perfect meal. But let's be real, at least in Calgary, Alberta, the average home size is 1700-2100 square feet, with approximately 8-9 foot ceilings.

While those gorgeous, aspirational designs are inspiring, the reality is that most of us live in homes where practicality and functionality are paramount.

That's where the beauty of creating realistic home spaces comes into play. In this post, we'll delve into crafting interiors that are not only visually appealing but also realistic, functional, and comfortable for everyday living.

Embracing Your Lifestyle

Think about your daily routines, hobbies, and the needs of your family. Do you have pets? Children? Do you work from home? At our house, we have teenagers, a large dog named Theo and I work from home, so having daily tidy routines, hard wearing surfaces and great storage is key for enjoying our home.

Thoughtful Storage Solutions

I love a lived in space where you can get a clue of who lives in the house, but clutter can quickly diminish that 'lived- in- look' to a 'over- run-with-stuff-look'.

Incorporate clever storage solutions like coat hooks, baskets, hanging wall files for each member of the family, double duty storage ottomans, built in cabinets, and so much more to keep your home organized. These practical additions help keep the peace while keeping the house clean and uncluttered.

Durability and Maintenance

Realistic home spaces are designed with durability in mind. Consider materials and finishes that are easy to clean and maintain. Materials like quartz, tiles, hard woods, and wipeable materials like leather or good quality vinyls, or washable, high performance fabrics, make for easier, realistic living that looks amazing but is durable and hard working. Honestly, if we didn't have some of these materials in our house, especially in the high traffic areas, we would be doing renos every few years... but maybe that would be fun??... Just a weeee bit on the expensive side.

Personal Touch and Comfort

Realistic home spaces are not devoid of personality. Infuse your interiors with items that hold sentimental value, such as family photos, artwork, and heirlooms. Create cozy nooks for reading or unwinding, and invest in comfortable furniture that beckons you to relax.

Real Living

Homes can look really great, have the most expensive cabinets, furniture, and accessories, but if it is not practical, functional, and comfortable, you might have your self a place where you can't sit back, relax, and enjoy time with family and friends. Remember, your home is where real life happens, and the best design is one that works seamlessly with your lifestyle.
